Sanju: Rajkumar Hirani reveals why Aamir Khan did not play Sunil Dutt

From Ranbir Kapoor's incredible transformation to the story of Sanjay Dutt's controversial life, Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju has been on everyone's lips for a number of reasons.

Reports were doing the rounds that 'Mr Perfectionist' was the original choice to play the role of Sanjay Dutt's father, Sunil Dutt. It was being said that while he did find the role intriguing, he later changed his mind. Paresh Rawal was eventually roped in for the part.

Director Rajkumar Hirani revealed in an interview with Outlook why Aamir did not come on board Sanju. "Aamir is a friend. Any script I write, I bounce it to him. When I narrated ­Sanju to him, he loved it and said, 'Main bhi kuch karta hoon (I should also do something in it).' Then I said, do this. But he was already doing the role of an elderly man in Dangal (2016) around the same time," he said.

The filmmaker went on to say that they have not glorified Sanjay Dutt in the film at all. "I made it clear that if he would ever ask me to change this line or hide that scene, I would not make it," he said.

After several delays, the Sanjay Dutt biopic will finally release on June 29 this year. Apart from Ranbir Kapoor and Paresh Rawal, Sanju stars Manisha Koirala as Nargis Dutt and Dia Mirza as Maanayata Dutt. Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal will also be seen in the film.
